Vessel documentation is the Federal registration with the United States Coast Guard at the office of the National Vessel Documentation Center for both Recreational And Commercial vessels meeting the qualifying volume measurement of at least 5 net tons. United States citizenship is required.
USCG Documentation establishes an internationally recognized maritime title providing an official basis for vessel identification. A history of ownership, Preferred Ship Mortgage, Notice of Claim of Lien are recorded at the National Vessel Documentation Center on title record for the vessel and can be provided as an Abstract of Title upon request.
Most lenders currently require a vessel to be a federally United States Coast Guard documented vessel, allowing the lender to perfect a security interest referred to as a Preferred Ship Mortgage.
